Jet Streams

A jet stream is a band of fast moving, high-altitude air. At the polar front, cold winds meet warm winds and there is a high pressure gradient. Jet stream wind speeds can be faster than 300 miles per hour. Airplane pilots flying west to east try to use these winds to help their planes fly faster.
