Wind | page 1 |
Wind is air moving. You cannot see air. Air is all around us. You can see grass or trees swaying (moving back and forth). You can feel the air moving past your face and body. Blow on your hand. Feel the air moving. Warm air rises and cold air moves towards the ground. Have you seen dry leaves floating "up" through the air? This shows warm air rising (going up). Stand in front of your refrigerator. Open the freezer door. Put your hand under the doorway and you will feel the cold air. The cold air is "falling" toward the floor. Air has pressure. Blow up a balloon (this makes high air pressure inside the balloon). Now let go of it. The air comes rushing out (because the air pressure is less outside the balloon). Wind is caused by changes in pressure around the world. Wind can be fun for flying kites or small airplanes. Wind can be very dangerous and able to destroy people's property. Wind can push sailboats across the water. Wind can bring big snow storms.
