Introduction | page 1 |
When a pilot can cause a plane to turn, slow down, speed up, rise, or descend, this is called "control". The control engineer wants aircraft controls to be easily used by a pilot. An airplane that can fly through gusts of wind or unexpected turbulence (bumpy air) and still stay on course is thought to be very stable. Small aircraft are usually very stable. This type of plane is good for beginners learning to fly. Some larger aircraft are not as stable as the smaller planes. These are usually commercial aircraft used for passengers and freight. The pilot must be more actively involved in flying this plane. The larger planes usually make smooth turns, so that passengers are not upset! Military aircraft, especially fighters, are not very stable. The pilot must be very skilled to keep the plane under control. This type of aircraft can turn quickly. This could be very important in an aerial dogfight!
