An airplane can move in six different ways. An easy way to show these motions is using the "right hand rule". Look at the sketch below and try to put your right hand in this shape: thumb pointing forward, index (first) finger pointing right and middle finger pointing down (the last two fingers curled up out of the way).

This shows three of the ways a plane can move: 1) back and forth along the thumb; 2) left or right along the index finger; 3) up or down along the middle finger.

The next three movements use the movement of the hand shape. This shows the position of the airplane 1) the handshape (thumb forward) twists moving the index finger up and down. This represents the "roll" used for turning an airplane. 2) the handshape dips the thumb down and up. This represents "pitch" ( the up and down movement of the nose of the plane). 3) the handshape wags back and forth representing "yaw" or the sideways motion of the airplane.

These six movements and positions show all the ways a plane can move.
