Aerodynamics is the study of the forces acting on an object due to air moving past it. Aerodynamic forces are important for airplanes, sailboats, cars and other objects moving quickly through the air as well as buildings, bridges and windmills which are effected by the wind moving past them.

Aerodynamics is a speciality of fluid dynamics, which studies the forces generated by all fluids and not just gases like air. fluid dynamics is not the same is as aerodynamics though since it also includes things like hydrodynamics which is the study of liquid flows applied to boat hulls, flood control, and other such things.
