Many people built hot air balloons. They used fire to make the air hot inside the balloon. This made the balloon rise. These people could not control the balloon.

Henri Gifford, a Frenchman, flew a balloon with steam. Steam is water vapor. Steam heats the air inside the balloon making it rise. This was wonderful.

Later, Zeppelin, a German, used an engine to fly balloons filled with hydrogen. Zeppelin could now control the balloon. These balloons became very famous. A long time ago an Englishman named Roger Bacon made a flying machine. The flying machine was a balloon shape.
