The first jets were made more than 50 years ago. Airplanes with propellers were slow. People wanted to fly faster. A new kind of engine was needed. A jet engine. Two men each built their own jets. One was in Germany and the other man was in England. They did not know each other. They both had the same idea. Both jets were able to fly. They were lighter in weight. They did not have propellers. They both sucked air in one end and pushed air out the other end (air-breathing engines). The planes could fly very fast.
Today, jet airplanes can fly faster than the speed of sound! These two
men helped us to fly faster in bigger airplanes.
