A jet engine sucks air in the front and then pushes it out the back. This is called an air-breathing engine. A jet engine uses a lot of gas.

The air going through the engine can turn a propeller or a fan. This kind of engine uses less gas. Some air-breathing engines use a propeller, some do not.

All the air-breathing airplanes can fly very fast. Very fast hot air comes out the back of the airplane. This is called an air-breathing engine.
