Most parts on an airplane are made of metal. Aluminum is used on the wings and body. Aluminum is light weight. Steel is strong and heavy. Steel is used for the landing gear. A special metal (titanium) is used for very hot places, like the engine.

Airplane builders are trying to make new materials that are stronger and lighter. Now, airplanes are made of very strong, light materials. They can fly high and far. They are safe to fly.
