Sometimes our cities or neighborhoods are not safe. Police help us to stay safe. They may have nightsticks (clubs) and guns. They have special cars that can move quickly.

Sometimes our country is not safe from other countries. Another country may want to attack us. They may want to hurt our citizens who are in their land.

We must have police (military) who can protect our country and our citizens. Sometimes they may have to leave our country and go over the sea to another land.

Some military people use aircraft. The aircraft may take off from land or water. The aircraft may go down a runway or fly straight up (helicopter). Airplanes and helicopters can also take off from the deck of a special ship. It is called an aircraft carrier.

Military aircraft may have rockets, bombs and guns. These are needed to protect ourselves. Many of the military planes are very fast. They are usually jet airplanes. Jet airplanes do not have propellers.

Some military airplanes can fly very high. These airplanes can "spy" (look down) on other lands from very high up. They can see enemy armies, guns and rockets.

The United States must keep making better airplanes. We must be able to go faster and higher then other countries. Then we can protect our country and our citizens.
