Setting Up Camp In Kitty Hawk - Thursday, October 4, 1900 The History: Orville and Wilbur set up camp about 1/2 mile away from the Tate's.
Very coincidently, 57 years later on October 4, 1957, the "Space Race" will begin as the Soviet Union launches the first manmade earth satellite, Sputnik. Sputnik, which means "traveling companion" in Russian, was less than two feet long. However it orbited the earth and was able to transmit signals back to earth.
Less than a month later Russia sent a second satellite, Sputnik II, into space carrying a dog named "Laika".
