Very coincidently, 57 years later on October 4, 1957, the "Space Race" will begin as the Soviet Union launches the first manmade earth satellite, Sputnik. Sputnik, which means "traveling companion" in Russian, was less than two feet long. However it orbited the earth and was able to transmit signals back to earth.
