Seeking "Partial" Success - Monday, September 3, 1900 The History: As a bishop in the United Brethren Church, Milton Wright, Wilbur and Orville's father traveled a great deal. Today there was a Labor Day celebration, and the bishop took a hack to Ft. Wayne, then on the 1:45 PM train to Toledo, the 5:00 PM train to Cygnet, walked to Trombley and then on an electric car to Jerry City. Wilbur wrote his father a letter while he traveled explaining that he planned to visit the North Carolina coast to begin some flight experiments. "It is my belief that flight is possible and, while I am taking up the investigation for pleasure rather than profit, I think there is a slight possibility of achieving fame and fortune from it. ... I am certain that I can reach a point much in advance of any previous workers in this field even if complete success is not attained just at present." If nothing else Wilbur tells his father, he will have a vacation and see a new area of the country. Quotation from the book Miracle at Kitty Hawk by Fred C. Kelly.
This is the trademark of the Wrights and many successful engineers and scientists: their ability to "chip away" at a problem. They recognize what worked, what didn't work, and use that information to attack and overcome any problem. |
