The Wrights Meet Chanute - Day 2 - Thursday, June 27, 1901 The History: Bishop Milton Wright noted in his diary, "Mr. O. Chanute spent most of the forenoon and till after 2:00 with us. He is an authority on aerial navigation ...."
Katharine Wright acted as hostess for their midday meal on June 27th. Their housekeeper, fifteen year old Carrie Kaylor [Grumbach] served the meal and remembered the day. Katherine had instructed her to serve Chanute the better of two melons for dessert. One melon was not ripe and instead Carrie sliced the melon into five pieces (one slice each for Chanute, Wilbur, Orville, Katherine and Bishop Wright). Later Katharine shared her displeasure with Carrie. Katharine did not feel that 1/5 of a melon was a sufficient dessert for their honored guest from Chicago. Quotation from the book Diaries 1857-1917 by Bishop Milton Wright.
