Plans For Chanute's First Visit - Friday, May 17, 1901 The History: The Wrights are extremely pleased that Octave Chanute may visit them in Dayton. Wilbur advises Chanute that from March through June, twelve to fourteen hours per day are devoted to their bicycle business. Their days are less hectic after the 4th of July and they are basically free September through December. However, they are free on any Sunday. While Chanute is welcome to visit anytime, the brothers fear they may be interrupted by bicycle business during a workday. Wilbur concludes his letter with a note about the anemometer. They prefer to use the Richards anemometer since the brothers' intent is to monitor wind velocity for very short periods of time and do not need automatic recording. [Chanute has an instrument which will record the velocities from the Richard's anemometer.] Milton Wright, Orville and Wilbur Wright's father was a minister and later bishop in the Church of the United Brethren in Christ. The Wrights respected Sunday as the Sabbath and did not work, although reading and letter writing was allowed. It is important to note the Wrights commitment and keen sense of priorities as businessmen. They worked on their flight experiments during the slow seasons at the bicycle shop - not all the time. In many ways this makes their accomplishments more amazing since they only worked on aeronautical investigations during their "spare time" between 1899 and 1902.
