Getting The Roof On - Thursday, September 4, 1902 The History: In his personal diary, Orville writes that the work on the addition to their campsite building is continuing. In spite of rain today, they raised the addition's frame and got siding and roof slats up.
Roof slats are thin flat strips of wood or metal. The slats were attached to the roof's rafters. (Rafters are parallel beams that support the roof.) Later laths (thin pieces of wood that serve as the platform to attach roofing tar-paper and shingles) would be added.
