The History: The troupe of Orville and Wilbur Wright, Octave Chanute, Augustus Herring and George Spratt ventured to the north slope of Big Hill with both the Wrights' glider and Chanute's multiple-wing machine. The wind from the north and northeast peaked at about 9 meters/second (about 20 miles/hour) at 10 A.M.

On the multiple-winged machine Herring was unable to obtain sufficient speed to glide even at a moderately steep angle of 13°.

With the Wrights alternating as the machine's operator, Spratt, Chanute and Herring recorded some of these glides

Dan Tate and Lorin Wright headed from the campsite to Kitty Hawk to pick up the ordered supplies and Chanute's oscillating wing machine which had arrived via Captain Midgett's schooner, the Lou Willis.
