Propeller Calculations - Saturday, November 14, 1903 The History: The brothers received a letter from their father, Bishop Milton Wright, a newspaper from their neighbor in Dayton, Ohio, George Feicht, and a gift - two pairs of gloves - which Octave Chanute purchased for the brothers in Manteo. Today, the Wrights determined the pressures [forces over the area] on the surfaces of the new machine's front rudder, calibrated an anemometer, and spend the evening making propeller calculations. Their engine's gear ratio may not generate enough power. "However", Orville wrote in his diary, "we are still hopeful. The engine will have to make 875 revolutions per minute 305 [revolutions] of the screw [propeller] to furnish 100 pounds of thrust standing still. If it fails to do this there will be little hope of success until we get new gears so as to speed engine up." Quotation from the book The Papers of Wilbur and Orville Wright, Volume 1 by M. McFarland.
