Calculations For The 1902 Glider - Thursday, August 27, 1903 The History: Octave Chanute replies to Wilbur's letter of August 23, 1903. He is sorry that the Wrights' trip to Kitty Hawk has been held up. He is aware that the brothers are very busy, but asks if Wilbur can answer two questions. 1. What was the area [a number in square feet] of the 1902 glider used in the Wrights calculations? Chanute tells Wilbur that he assumes that the area of the front rudder [as well as the wings] was included. 2. Which of the airfoil shape results obtained in the wind tunnel in 1901 [see the airfoil shapes and results from Wilbur's 1901 notebook] was used in the calculations of the 1902 glider (see graphic below)? Chanute is unable to compute the same results.
Calculations of the 1902 Glider Wilbur Wright Sent to Octave Chanute on July 12, 1903 [in Wilbur's handwriting]. The columns are Speed (in miles per hour), Normal Pressure ( in pounds per square foot), Percent of Normal to Support, Angle of Incidence, Tangential, Loss Due to Superposing, Head Resistance in Pounds, Angle of Descent.
