The History: Today, September 23, 1903, Orville Wright notes on the first page of his 1903 diary that the brothers left Dayton, Ohio at 8:55 AM. They are headed to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to continue their flight experiments in a new machine they have built which has both an engine and propellers. This year at Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, the Wright brothers are destined to be the first men to successfully operate a powered controllable flying machine.
