Updating Octave Chanute On Their Progress - Thursday, October 1, 1903

The History: Wilbur wrote Octave Chanute from the brothers' Kill Devil Hills campsite. He reviewed the events of the past week and summarized their activities:

  • They had reached Manteo on Roanoke Island last Friday.
  • Their Kill Devil Hills campsite was in fairly good condition although their building had been moved over 2 feet by a 90 mile/hour wind during a February storm.
  • While they planned to work on their building on Monday, the weather conditions were so wonderful they practiced gliding instead.
  • Wilbur estimated they had made 75 glides and most lasted longer than 20 seconds. They tried soaring [hovering or trying to fly in one place]. Wilbur related that one of these soaring attempts lasted 26 2/5 seconds and traveled only 50 feet.
  • With practice, Wilbur thinks they will be able to soar off of Big Hill whenever the wind is greater than 9 meters/second [20 miles/hour].
  • Monday's conditions varied between 9-14 meters/second [20-31 miles/hour].
  • Now, they are constructing a second new building which will be 44 feet X 16 feet X 9 feet.

Orville noted in his personal diary that there was very little wind today. The brothers worked on their building. The sides of the building have been completed and they are working on the roof. The lathing is on and they have started papering the roof.
