Freight And A Big Storm Both Arrive - Thursday, October 8, 1903

The History: The Wrights' freight arrived on the schooner the Lou Willis during the night. Dan Tate arranged to have some men move their goods to the Wright campsite. Dan reached the camp at 11 AM and the freight arrived at noon.

Light winds (3 meters/second or about 7 miles/hour) rose to 8 meters/second (about 18 miles/hour) by 9 AM. After lunch, the Wrights brought their modified 1902 machine to a small hill and practiced gliding. During one glide, Wilbur had the left wing up with the wind blowing from that same direction. "The machine sailed off sidewise at a rapid rate and landed on [the] right wing scooping up several hund[red] lbs. of sand." They stopped for the day and returned to their camp.

Dark storm clouds appeared and the brothers finished the hinges on the north door of their building just before a storm began. Orville noted in his personal diary that the winds were high and it rained all night. They slept very little.
