Wright Again

Dr. Spratt Arrives At Kill Devil Hills - Friday, October 23, 1903

The History: During the morning the brothers worked on the skids of the flyer. [Skids are a pair of runners used as landing gear, as on a modern helicopter. The Wrights' gliders and the 1903 Flyer did not have wheels.] After lunch they added some hinges.

Their friend, Dr. George Spratt, arrived at the camp around 12PM and they stayed up until 11PM discussing his ideas on flight.

Why did the Flyer have skids and not wheels? The Wrights were bicycle mechanics so they certainly had access to wheels. [Hint: What type of terrain did the Wrights conduct their flight experiments? Would wheels be efficient in this terrain?]
