Talk with the children about the dynamics of lift and drag.
Pass out the clean Styrofoam tray to each child. Help the children
to mark off two 1 1/2 inch strips from the center of the Styrofoam tray
with the pencil and ruler.
Have the children carefully cut the tray along the lines. The
children will now have 2 strips that are 6 to 10 inches long, with curved
ends.
Next, have the children staple the pair of Styrofoam strips together
in an X shape so that the curved ends of one strip face down and the
curved ends of the other strip face up.
Take the children outside to a large grassy area where they can
safely throw the boomerangs. Tell the children to throw the boomerang
like a baseball overhanded.
Does the way the children throw their boomerangs make any difference
in their ability to return?
