Sailboat Drag

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • clean Styrofoam tray (trays that meats are sold on in the grocery store)
  • wooden skewers (used for shishkabobs)
  • small piece of a clean sheet
  • scissors
  • fan
  • large container of water
  • pen

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Discuss with the children the concept of drag in relationship to a sailboat.

two Have each child make a sailboat. Have each of them draw a boat shape on the Styrofoam tray with a pen.

three Cut the boat shape out of the Styrofoam tray.

four Make the sails out of the clean sheets for the children. Give each child a sail with the wooden skewer already through the sail. To insert the wooden skewer easily make two small holes in the sheet sail in two places to slip the skewer through.

five Have the children put the sail on the Styrofoam boat.

six Taking turns, have the children put their boat in the water. Teacher - Turn on the fan for the child. Two boats can be put in the water at the same time to see if they move at different speeds by the same amount of 'wind' created by the fan.

seven Talk together as a class about how drag from the sail affects the sailboat.
