"As The Wind Blows"

[information | preparation | activity ]

CONCEPT:

Environmental conditions, temperature, density, and pressure, are continually changing.

STUDENT OBJECTIVE:

Student will observe that a change in wind direction often occurs before a change in the weather. Student will observe wind direction and how fast the wind is blowing.

OVERVIEW:

In this activity, the student will be using a windsock to see how fast the wind is blowing and from what direction. Student will take windsock outside to record observation.

TEACHER TEXT:

PREPARATION TIME: 15 minutes

LESSON TIME: 60 minutes

TEACHER PREP:

Make a "Christmas" stocking pattern before class

WORDS TO KNOW:

MATERIALS NEEDED:

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

1. Place pattern over two pieces of tissue paper and trace pattern with pencil.

2. Carefully cut out the pattern ending up with two pieces.

3. Glue the toe and sides closed.

4. Make a wire ring.

5. Tape it under the edge of the stocking.

6. Punch holes in three places below the wire ring.

7. Tie the three pieces of yarn together and then tie the windsock onto the dowel rod.

8. Set the dowel outside and observe.

WHY?

As the wind blows, air fills up the windsock and lifts it as it is attached to the dowel. As the wind is blowing, the windsock will move in the direction of the blowing wind. The material used for the windsock is light enough to create a lifting action.

ASSESSMENT: Can the student communicate what they observed?

4......Student will be able to communicate the windsock is a tool to measure wind speed and direction. Also, moving air fills the windsock and which causes it to move in the direction of the moving air.

3......Student will be able to communicate that the windsock indicates wind direction and air fills the windsock.

2......Student will be able to communicate that air fill the windsock.

1......Student will be able to communicate the windsock moves in the air.
