CONCEPT:

Environmental conditions, temperature, density, and pressure, are continually changing.

STUDENT OBJECTIVE:

The student will communicate how water is recycled into the atmosphere. This process is called the water cycle.

OVERVIEW:

In this activity, the student will be making bag to catch water to simulate rain and the water cycle.

TEACHER TEXT:

PREPARATION TIME: 15 minutes

LESSON TIME: 45 minutes

TEACHER PREP:

WORDS TO KNOW:

MATERIALS NEEDED:(per group)

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

1. Pour water into the plastic bag.

2. Add a few drops of food coloring.

3. Seal the bag and place it in a sunny window.

4. Tape one corner of the top of the bag to the window.

5. Let the sun shine on the bag for a couple of hours, then observe what you see.

WHY?

Water drops came from the water at the bottom of the bag because no new water could enter the bag. The drops that came from the bottom of the bag will fall back down to the bottom of the bag. Water from the Earth evaporates and then returns back to the Earth as precipitation.

ASSESSMENT: Can the student communicate what they observed?

4......Student is able to communicate that the rain that falls to the Earth is a result of the water cycle. Water evaporates into the atmosphere and becomes too heavy and returns in the form of precipitation.

3......Student is able to communicate that rain is a result of the water cycle.

2......Student is able to communicate that the clouds become too heavy with precipitation and then falls to Earth.
