Falling Books

MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • 5 or 6 books for each team
  • Cart on rollers or chair for each team
  • Paper and pencils

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

1 Discuss with the students the concept of inertia.

2 Divide the students into groups of teams of 2. Have each team experiment with the books and chair.

3 Have one member of the team stack the books on the seat of the chair and push the chair forward.

4 Next, have the other team member stop the chair quickly and observe what happens. (The chair will stop, but the books will continue to move forward and may even fall to the floor.)

5 Then after each team has had a turn, ask each team to write up a short paragraph on the experiment.
