Running Stop

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Indoor or outdoor running space (at least 25 feet)
  • Masking tape or chalk

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Talk with the students about inertia in simple terms.

two Take a few minutes to talk about safety - no tripping others.

three Using the tape or chalk, mark a start line, two midpoints at 10 feet and 20 feet, and the stop line at 25 feet.

four Have each child take a turn running the straight line without slowing down. Instruct them to run to the first midpoint at 10 feet and stop. Then have them start running again after they come to a complete stop at the 10 foot spot to the 20 foot marking point. Next have them run from the 20 foot marking point to the 25 foot stop line.

five The children will discover that each time they try to stop that their feet may stop, but that their upper body will continue to move forward for a period of time. This will especially happen when they try to stop really fast.

six Discuss together with the children what they have experienced with inertia.
