Sleight of Hand

MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • Sheets of paper for each student
  • Unopened can of soda for each student
  • Paper and pencils

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

1 Discuss with the students the concept of inertia.

2 Give each student the items they will need for the experiment: a sheet of paper and an unopened can of soda.

3 Have the students lay the sheet of paper on a clean, dry table.

4 Next have the students place the unopened can of soda on one end of the paper. Make sure the can is clean and dry.

5 Students: hold the other end of the paper and pull with a sharp jerk.

6 Try this several times. Observe what happens. (Once you are able to pull the paper out with a level, fast jerk the can will remain upright in the same place on the table.

7 Have the students write a short paragraph about the experiment and what they observed.

8 An extension idea: Try this same experiment using a book or cup of water instead of a can of soda.
