Sliding Down the Hill

MATERIALS NEEDED

  • grassy hill
  • pieces of cardboard

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Discuss with the students the material under Overview and Teacher Text so that each child has some understanding of friction in relationship to Newton's First Law of Motion.

two Talk about safety tips that need to be observed while going down the hill. Each person needs to take their turn in line, make sure that you wait along enough time before being pushed down the hill, and replace the cardboard when it starts falling apart.

three Have each student take a turn going down the hill on a piece of cardboard. They start their ride down by a push by one other student.

four Then the second trip down have students pair up and go down two at a time, being pushed by two other students. In this way, the students can compare their first ride alone with the second ride. (The friction changes when there are two students on the cardboard).

five Return to the class and discuss what happened on the hill on their first 'ride' and in their second 'ride' in relationship to friction and Newton's First Law of Motion.

six For the older students have them write a short essay on friction and how it affects Newton's First Law of Motion.
