Discuss with the students the information under the Teacher Text,
Science Concept, and Student Objective. Make sure that each student has
at least a partial understanding of the material.
Decide if you want the class to be divided into groups of three or
four. Have each team have two pieces of square wood 5 inches by 5 inches
and dishwasher soap.
Have the students follow the following steps when doing the
experiment: take two pieces of wood and put one on the other, and lay a
hand on the top piece and try to move it. The friction is probably too
strong. Then try placing dishwasher liquid soap between the two pieces
of wood and see how well the top piece moves after the lubrication has
been applied. (Have the students move the top piece of wood after the
soap has been placed between the wood using a circular motion in a
clockwise direction.)
Have a class discussion after each student has had a turn to do the
experiment. Ask the students to then write a one page paper on what
happened during the experiment in relationship to Newton's First Law of
Motion, friction, and lubrication.
