Share the large pictures of the various insects with the children.
Show the children the materials to be used to make the insects.
They can use the materials for any part of the animals they create.
Discuss with the children what parts each of the insects will need.
The insects will need to have six jointed legs, three body parts (head,
thorax, abdomen), two antennae, and wings.
Have the children notice where the legs and wings are attached to the
body of an insect (on the thorax). Remind them to design their model
with these proper body connections in mind.
Have the children utilize cellophane for transparent wings, sequins
for compound eyes, tissue paper for opaque wings, pipe cleaners cut at
different lengths for legs and antennae.
Remind the children that sometime we cannot see all of the body parts
on an insect because the parts are hidden by the wings.
Ask them to put in all of the parts even if they cannot be seen. For
example, a beetle model can be designed so that the wings can be lifted
off to expose the hidden abdomen and the hidden transparent wings.
Find a place in the classroom where you can display the insects.
