Take the children outside and gather as many different types of
insects in the jars and shoeboxes. Utilize the butterfly net!
|
|
Do not worry about putting holes in the jar lid. There is enough air
in the jar for the insect to live for a few hours. If you open the jar
lid every few hours for a few seconds, the small creatures will have
enough air. If you poke holes in the metal lids, the sharp points on the
lids could injure the small animals inside the jars or the animals might
be able to escape out of the holes.

|
Have the children observe what the insects look like. Thumb through
the nature guidebook together to find out what the insect is. Read to
the children what the insect likes to eat. If the book does not describe
what food the insect eats, place a sample of soil and leaves in the jar
so that it will not starve.

|
Place a piece of masking tape on the jar and use a marking pen to
write the identity of the kind of insect is in the jar.
|
|
Find a place in the room where you can set all the jars and plastic
shoeboxes. Make a large sign "Small Creature Zoo" to place by the
insects.
|
|
Enjoy the insects for a couple of days and then release them back into
their natural habitat.
