Finding Clues in a Picture

MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • A picture from this Web textbook of an age appropriate myth or story for younger children or a one page reading from a myth for older children.
STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Let the children visually scan the picture or the one page of reading. They should be familiar with what is on the page.

two Discuss the picture or one page reading with the children. Ask the children what they see.
  • What do they think is happening on the page?
  • What happened before?
  • What will happen next?
  • What time of day? What day? What season is it?
  • Can they tell from the picture or story?
  • How do they feel about what is happening in the picture or story?
  • Are there any people in the picture? Animals?

3 For older children using the one page reading, asses their thinking and processing:

  • Can they find a period, comma, question mark, exclamation point?
  • Can they find a specific word you have chosen?
  • What are the first and last words on the page?
  • Name a word in the middle of the page.
  • Name a word that begins with a sound you choose.
  • Name a word that ends with a specific sound such as "ing", "ed", or "er".
  • Name a word that means a definition you choose.
  • Name a word that is the opposite.
  • Name the characters in the story.
  • How do they feel about this page of the story?
  • What do they think will happen next?
  • What do they think happened before?
