"Map the Myth"

CONCEPT:

Mythological stories developed as a result of man's early observations of flying objects and his attempts to explain the natural phenomena.

STUDENT OBJECTIVE:

The student will be able to crawl on the floor following a pattern map of a myth or the word myth.

OVERVIEW:

The student will demonstrate an understanding of myths related to flight.

TEACHER TEXT:

From the beginning of history we have been fascinated by flight. Ancient myths and legends of every culture are filled with tales of gods and humans with the ability to fly. Symbols of freedom and mastery, flight myths fanned the dream of people everywhere to join their heroes in reality.


PREPARATION TIME: 10 minutes

LESSON TIME: 30 minutes

Select and print one of the myths from this Web textbook.

WORDS TO KNOW: MATERIALS NEEDED:

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

1. Make a big M on the floor 3-5 feet in diameter with masking tape.

2. Have the children crawl over the letter. Have them repeat the name of the letter as they crawl over it.

3. Have the children use the "cross-lateral crawl", where the right leg moves with the left arm and the left leg with the right arm.

4. Vary the crawl by adding the letters to myth ..y...t...h.

5. Read a story or myth with the children.

6. Together, create a map about the myth on the floor with the masking tape.

7. Have the children crawl around the myth.

WHY?

This activity helps with gross-motor development. It is necessary to stabilize a child's learning level by offering activities for both the right and left side of the brain. This activity emphasizes the right hemisphere. It is a tool for developing the thinking process in science, mathematics and other subjects.

ASSESSMENT: Can the student communicate what they observed?

4......Student is able to communicate the name of the letter they crawl over.

3......Student is able to communicate that they are crawling over a letter.

2......Student is able to communicate they are crawling over tape.

1......Student is only able to communicate they are moving on their hands and knees.

EXTENSIONS:

1. Add other letters using the entire alphabet.

2. Add numbers.

3. Read a myth to the children. Together decide on how to make a scene or a map about the myth. Create a map of the myth on the floor with masking tape. Have the children crawl over the map. Discuss the parts of the map before and after the activity. Add to the map daily and repeat the activity.

4. Expand the map activity by using cardboard refrigerator boxes, scissors and duct tape. Teacher can use the utility knife to help the children make doors and windows in the refrigerator box. Make a giant diorama of the myth with the children. Have the children crawl through the diorama or scene of the myth.

5. Expand the activity to outside using several refrigerator boxes and other props depending on the myth you select.
