Mythological stories developed as a result of man's early
observations of flying objects and his attempts to explain the
natural phenomena.
STUDENT OBJECTIVE:
The student will be able to sort and classify characters from
mythology into categories.
OVERVIEW:
The student will demonstrate an understanding of myths
related to flight.
TEACHER TEXT:
From the beginning of history we have been fascinated by flight.
Ancient myths and legends of every culture are filled with tales
of gods and humans with the ability to fly. Symbols of freedom
and mastery, flight myths fanned the dream of people everywhere
to join their heroes in reality.
3. Brainstorm and choose categories to use to classify characters.
4. Sort the characters into categories such as birds, animals, humans.
5. Re-sort in some other way (by color or by job).
6. Re-sort in another way if possible.
7. Read another myth and do the same thing except sort the characters
in both myths.
8. Is there a pattern about characters in myths?
9. Try sorting again with another myth. What are the patterns?
10. Make a bulletin board to show the categories and the
classifications.
11. Continue to add and sort with more myths.
WHY?
Sorting and classifying are mathematical and scientific processes.
Sorting helps the student:
connect abstract ideas to the real world
observe and describe properties of things
compare and contrast properties
notice similarities and differences of properties
solve problems and find different solutions to problems
make predictions
draw conclusions
think logically
make judgments and make decisions
describe properties used to sort into categories
ASSESSMENT: Can the student communicate what they observed?
4......Student is able to sort and resort characters into 3
separate categories.
3......Student is able to sort and resort characters into 2
separate categories.
2......Student is able to sort characters into a category.
1......Student is only able to realize that the characters are
different.
EXTENSIONS:
Sorting and classifying walks:
Choose an aspect of the myth that you want to emphasize and
arrange a walk; with the students to look for things
that have that goal in mind. Suggestions: things that move,
things that have feathers, things that fly, things that have
a rough or smooth texture, old things, new things,
things that have to do with air, things that are wet, etc.
Talk about the things that are found with that attribute.
Make a class book of the drawings or writings from the
walk.
Display the pictures, book or writings of the students.
