Sorting helps the student: connect abstract ideas to the real world observe and describe properties of things compare and contrast properties notice similarities and differences of properties solve problems and find different solutions to problems make predictions draw conclusions think logically make judgments and make decisions describe properties used to sort into categories ASSESSMENT: Can the student communicate what they observed?

Student is able to sort and resort characters into 3 separate categories. Student is able to sort and resort characters into 2 separate categories. Student is able to sort characters into a category. Student is only able to realize that the characters are different.
