- SCIENCE CONCEPT:
- Newton's First Law of Motion: objects at rest remain
at rest and objects in motion remain in motion unless acted upon
by an outside force.
- STUDENT OBJECTIVE:
- The student will discover a part of Newton's First
Law of Motion: an object at rest remains at rest unless acted upon by an
outside force.
- OVERVIEW:
- The student will run and stop at a designated spot to discover
that an object in motion remains in motion unless acted upon by
an outside force.
- TEACHER TEXT:
-
PREPARATION TIME: 5 minutes
LESSON TIME: 10 minutes
TEACHER PREP:
- Gather materials.
- Locate a "running" space of at least 10 feet.
WORDS TO KNOW:
- run
- stop
- line
- continue
- motion
MATERIALS NEEDED:
- indoor or outdoor running space (at least 10')
- masking tape or chalk
- STEPS TO FOLLOW:
- Using tape or chalk, mark a start and stop line on the floor or
ground at least 10' apart.
- .From the start line, run to the stop line without slowing down.
Stop when you reach the stop line.
- What happens? (You may be able to stop your feet, but your
upper body will continue to move forward.)
- WHY?:
- Objects that are moving tend to keep moving. This is called
inertia and is part of Newton's First Law of Motion..
- ASSESSMENT: Can the student communicate what they observed?
- 4.... The student is able to communicate that it was hard to stop
because objects in motion tend to keep moving.
- 3.... The student is able to communicate that it was hard to stop
because they were running fast.
- 2.... The student is able to communicate that it was hard to stop.
- 1.... The student is able to communicate that he/she ran from one
line to another.
