Circular Centipede

MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • grassy, outside area
  • paper and pencils
STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Discuss with the children the material under Science Concept and Teacher Text in this lesson. Make sure that each child has at least a partial understanding of what is happening when they sit down on the human chair in relationship to Newton's Third Law of Motion.

two Talk together with the children about cooperation in this experiment. If everyone doesn't listen exactly to the directions that you give, the experiment will not work.

three Proceed outside to a grassy area. Ask the children to stand in a circle. Then on your command, everyone should sit down at exactly the same time. If each person sits on the knees of the person behind them, nobody will fall over. But it is important that everyone get up at the same time. You can repeat the experiment with less children if you wish to see the dynamic with a smaller number of people.

four Return to the class and discuss together what has happened in relationship to Newton's Third Law of Motion. For the older students, have them write a short paper on what they have experienced in this experiment.
