Clinging Card

SCIENCE CONCEPT:
Lift occurs when the pressure on the upper surface on an object (wing) is less than the pressure on the lower surface.
STUDENT OBJECTIVE:
The student will demonstrate the effect of faster moving air.
OVERVIEW:
The student will experiment with a spool, card, and straight pin to demonstrate the effect of faster moving air.
TEACHER TEXT:
With the increase in speed on top, the pressure exerted decreases. This change makes the pressure pushing up from under the wing greater than the pressure pushing down on the top of the wing, so the wing moves up naturally.
PREPARATION TIME:
5 minutes.
LESSON TIME:
10 minutes.
TEACHER PREP:
Gather materials.
WORDS TO KNOW:
  • Bernoulli
  • pressure
  • air
