SCIENCE CONCEPT:
- The warm air pushes the cold currents of air out of the way and rises to the
upper atmosphere thus enabling birds to fly and glide for a longer duration
using these thermals.
STUDENT OBJECTIVE:
- The student will observe that the warm rising air that makes the paper snakes
move is called a thermal.
OVERVIEW:
- Students will make a paper snake that can move when the warm rising air above
a hot plate burner or other heat source is turned on.
TEACHER TEXT:
- Although true flyers, some birds also glide and soar. Perhaps to rest their
wings, hawks, vultures and gulls sometimes glide. As they glide, they drop
lower and lower until finally they must start flapping again to stay up in the air.
At other times, they have been known to soar higher and higher for hours on
warm currents called thermals.
