Show pictures and discuss the development of commercial airliners and
their features of today.
Place photographs and illustrations of the interior of commercial
aircraft in front of the classroom.
This is a two day project. On the first day have the students create
the charts, choose who they are going to be, and how they want to move
the furniture around in your classroom to create the interior of the
airplane.
After asking the students what crew member of the airplane they would
like to be, encourage them to bring items from home to enhance their
character. Remember, that you will also need passengers on the 'flight'.
Crew that will be needed: pilot and co-pilot, navigator, stewardesses
and stewards, ground crew and air traffic controllers in the tower to
direct the aircraft on and off the runway.
Have the students who volunteered to be the navigators on the flight
to chart the flight patterns using the white yarn and push pins on the
maps. The mileage charts will also be used by the ground crew who fill
the airplane with gas for the trip.
Allow the students to create scenes on the airplane with the
passengers interacting with the crew of the aircraft, etc.
The poster boards and art materials are to be used by the students to
create flight charts of where their particular commercial airlines
travels, times of arrival and departure, etc.
On the second day have the students move the tables and chairs/desks
around to imitate the interior of a commercial aircraft. Encourage the
students to 'create' this using their imaginations.
During the second day act out several "flights" of your commercial
airliner, utilizing each of the various crew members, ground crew, tower
staff, and passengers.
As an extension of this project, you could put this program on for a
neighboring classroom at your school.
