The Shape of a Blimp

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Photos and drawings of blimps, both early models and modern designs
  • Paper, pencils, erasers, rulers, marking pens

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one As a class go over the information about blimps that is in the Teachers Text. Discuss the various aspects of the blimp designs and the possibilities for various shaped blimps.

two Using the library books as further resource information for the students, pass the books out among different students.

three Divide the class into small groups and have discussions within each group about the possibilities in blimp design. Come back together as a class after 10 minutes and discuss the information that the different groups have gathered. Make sure that each group has at least one book on blimps from the library.

four Pass out the art supplies and ask each student to design a new shaped blimp. Make sure that each student has ample time to describe their inventive shaped blimp after they complete their drawing.

five Have the students write a short description of their blimp and how the various component parts of their blimp would be made if they could actually build it.

six Display the pictures on a bulletin board.

seven As an extension to this activity, ask an expert from a local group to come in and discuss the dynamics of blimp design and structure.
