What's In The Speed Range

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Books from the library on the aircraft and ducks
  • Poster boards to create charts
  • Map of the United States and Canada
  • Rulers, pencils, marking pens, erasers

STEPS TO FOLLOW:

one Go over the material in the Teacher Text with the students and answer any questions they may have on it.

two Pass out the books from the library and have the students examine the material for information on commercial aircraft, military aircraft, and ducks.

three Discuss the findings of the class before having the students compare the three flying patterns of the three flying "machines": commercial aircraft, military aircraft, and ducks.

four Divide the students into groups of 4. Each team should have 3 categories on their chart: the flying abilities of a commercial aircraft, a military aircraft, and a duck. Have the students include the similarities and differences of their abilities and limitations. Have students graph the speed, flight patterns, and time it will take for each of the three of them to fly from the west coast to the east coast.

five Have each group share their findings with the class as a whole.
