DEMONSTRATION #2 - Kimoto Flyer (Credit to Glen Kimoto)

Supplies:

10" Styrofoam plate
Pattern of Kimoto Flyer
Paper clip
scissors
rubber band launcher made from pencil and heavy rubber band

Procedure:

  1. Make flyer per attached instructions.
  2. Demonstrate flight of flyer in class.
  3. Make adjustments in control surfaces to demonstrate how it behaves differently.

Questions for class:

How would you make the model climb, dive, bank to the right, bank to the left, etc.? [To make the model climb, fold both of the flaps up. To make it dive, fold the flaps down. If you want to make it bank to the left, fold the left aileron down and the right aileron up. Conversly, if you want to bank to the right, fold the right aileron down and the left one up.]

SUGGESTION:

Leave the pattern for the students to make their own flyers.
