EXPERIMENT # 1: Uncontrolled Propulsion

Supplies:

Balloons of various sizes and shapes

Procedure:
  1. Release an inflated balloon and watch it fly.
  2. Release two balloons and compare their flights.

Expected Results:

They act like a miniature rocket. Larger balloons fly for longer periods of time.

Questions to ask the class:

  1. 1. How does this compare with actual rockets? [Both move in the opposite direction of the released energy. One difference is that rockets have a controlled flight and the balloons do not.]
  2. 2. Would the balloon travel further if directed on a straight path? [Although the distance would be the same, it would go further from the release point if it was directed in a straight line.]
  3. 3. How could this be accomplished? [See EXPERIMENT #2: Controlled Propulsion]
