EXPERIMENT # 1: Uncontrolled Propulsion
- Supplies:
Balloons of various sizes and shapes
- Procedure:
- Release an inflated balloon and watch it fly.
- Release two balloons and compare their flights.
-
- Expected Results:
- They act like a miniature rocket. Larger balloons fly
for longer periods of time.
- Questions to ask the class:
- 1. How does this compare with actual rockets?
[Both move in the opposite direction of the released energy.
One difference is that rockets have a controlled flight and
the balloons do not.]
- 2. Would the balloon travel further if directed on a straight
path? [Although the distance would be the same, it would go
further from the release point if it was directed in a straight
line.]
- 3. How could this be accomplished?
