Warm Versus Cold Tennis Ball Experiment

How many ways can you say that you want to do an experiment comparing a warm and cold tennis ball? There are many ways and they may be dependent on your interests and your final "product". Are you doing this experiment for fun, to learn, or as part of a science project, science fair or report?

Dr. Jani Macari Pallis, our project's principal investigator decided on these questions:

Problem : Does the temperature of a tennis ball affect its bounce?
How does temperature affect a tennis ball?
How does this affect a game?

Why did she choose these? "In thinking about the experiment I wanted to know which ball bounced higher. Maybe none of them bounce higher? I didn't want to restrict the question to just does a cold ball bounce higher? Or does the hot or warm ball bounce higher."

"Also, I don't just want to know if one of the balls bounces higher. I want to know why it does. That's why I wrote my second question: How does temperature affect a tennis ball?. Does the temperature affect the ball material? Does it affect the air inside the ball?"

"Last I want to know how this can affect a game. Do balls bounce differently based on the temperature at your club, court or tournament? Do hot/cold balls still bounce within the range specified by the ITF (International Tennis Federation)? Maybe the balls bounce differently but it doesn't really affect a game. Maybe the balls would have to be so hot/cold that realistically you couldn't play. That's what I'm interested in finding out!"
