Dr. Duane Knudson, Biomechanics, Sport Science

Duane Knudson is an assistant professor in the Department of Physical Education and Exercise Science at the California State University-Chico. He earned his Ph.D. in biomechanics from the Department of Physical Education at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He has over 12 years of experience teaching courses on the biomechanics of human movement.

His main areas of research are on the biomechanics of tennis, exercise, and the application of biomechanics in professional practice. He has received 14 extramural and intramural grants for biomechanics research and instruction. Dr. Knudson has made numerous international and national presentations, published nearly forty peer reviewed journal articles, and the first scholarly book on the qualitative analysis of human movement. He has conducted tennis research in the areas of grip, open and square stances, and string tension in tennis.

Some of Dr. Knudson's articles in professional journals or magazines show how biomechanics research can be applied in professional practice. He has been a leader in modification of the national curricular guidelines and standards for undergraduate instruction and has published research and instructional articles on biomechanics instruction.

Dr. Knudson is the former chair of the Biomechanics Academy of NASPE and serves on United States Tennis Association Sport Science Committee. He also serves on the editorial boards of scholarly journals and regularly reviews articles for Physical Therapy, the Journal of Biomechanics, and the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research.
