Preparing to Use the Camera

Because we were using a state of the art camera that had just been introduced, and never previously used to film sports, the team felt it was extremely important to practice filming live competitive tennis prior to our trip to New York. (The camera was so new in fact, that the team was unable to even obtain a manual--it had yet to be translated from the original Japanese version!)

For this reason, John set up a two-day filming test in California at a private court in California, at the home of his friend Ken Seibel, and invited top California players to participate in the test. The team wishes to thank Ken for the unrestricted access to his court and support of the project, and the following tournament players for allowing us to film them: Brooke Seibel, Louani Bascara, Scotty Scott, Mike Hamilton, Steve Cornell, Brent Abel, Kerry Mitchell, Geoff Cykman, and Scott Murphy.

Present at the test were John Gordon and Leslie Lieurance of Gordon Productions, Rick Sutherland of Itronics, the company in charge of leasing the camera to the team for Kodak, Cislunar staff member Eric Chattot, and John. Rick worked with Eric to teach him the camera set up and operational procedures, information Eric would then pass on to professional cameraman Mark Renaudin at the Open.

Although the team had seen a brief demo tape of footage shot with our camera, everyone was extremely excited to see it perform live on court. The results of the test exceeded our highest expectations! We had determined in the Los Angeles tests of the older digital tape systems that the team needed to film at a frame rate of 250 frames per second with a shutter speed of 1/2000 to capture both the spin rate of the ball, and also, to see the bounce of the ball on the court.
