Dr. E. Paul Roetert, Biomechanics Tennis has always been an important part of my life. My background in tennis is as a player, including college level, and as a student, researcher, and writer. As well, my father was the Davis Cup Captain for the Netherlands. I received my doctorate in biomechanics from the University of Connecticut, and serve as a Fellow in the American College of Sports Medicine. I have traveled the country giving presentations on sports science to players, teachers and coaches, and written regularly on tennis and tennis research. I first participated on the sport science project while I was with the United States Tennis Association (USTA) at the Player Development Center in Key Biscayne, Florida. As the administrator for the USTA Sport Science and Coaching Education programs, I was responsible for the testing, evaluating, and tracking of up-and-coming young American tennis players and providing them with the most current information on sports science. I still play tennis on a weekly basis, and am excited about what the results of this project may do to help us all understand the game we love and improve play at all levels. Recently, I was named the executive director of the American Sport Education Program (ASEP), a division of Human Kinetics, the international publishing company. The ASEP's mission is to improve the sport experience for American youth through instructional resources, workshops and courses for coaches, administrators and parents. Our motto is: "athletes first, winning second." As Executive Director, I am responsible for creating sports education materials including curricula for coaches, administrators, officials, parents and athletes for a variety of sports. Now that the project has expanded to other sports my role as an advisor is to assist the team in understanding different aspects of sport science and biomechanics.
